RECORD NUMBER OF UEL STUDENTS & STAFF CELEBRATE EXCELLENCE AT UELSU AWARDS

University of East London Students’ union brought staff and students together to celebrate and appreciate individuals, societies and organisations that have an exceptional positive impact on the student experience at the University of East London.

29/04/14 The Royal Regency, Manor Park –University of East London Students’ union brought staff and students together to celebrate and appreciate individuals, societies and organisations that have an exceptional positive impact on the student experience at the University of East London.

A record number of 763 Students nominated staff for the categories of “Most Innovative Teaching”, “Best Personal Tutor”, “Best Feedback”, “Best Supervisor”, “Best Support Staff” and “Best Lecturer”.  Staff awards were decided by a panel of elected student officers and a University senior manager.  Best lecturer Marcia Wilson was in attendance with her daughter Karis who delighted at seeing her Mother accept the award in front of an audience of over 160. Marcia stated that they both “thoroughly enjoyed the event and everyone involved in organising the event should be very proud.”  Staff member David Watkinson received special recognition for being nominated in 5 different categories.

Best Personal Tutor – James Beale

Best Feedback – Stefano Casalotti

Best Supervisor – Ashok Jansari

Best Support Staff – Glen Marston

Best Lecturer – Marcia Wilson

Special Recognition (was nominated in 5 different categories) – David Watkinson

Student societies were also awarded for “Best student-Led Event”, “Best Contribution from a Society Organiser”, “Best Supporting Staff Member”, and “Best society”.  “Best Supporting Organisation” was also awarded to an external organisation that had gone the extra distance in supporting students.  Law & Criminology society members cheered and jumped for joy upon receiving the award for best society, and were already buoyed by the recognition of the BPP Law School as best supporting organisation, both having worked together tirelessly to improve employability, opportunities and events for students in their field of study through sponsored activities and guidance. 

The event was coordinated by UEL graduate and UELSU events intern Tarah Long.

About the awards

The awards are run annually and seek to recognise the outstanding contributions of staff and students, with the principle of nominations coming first and foremost from students,.  Funded and organised by UELSU the awards are also intended to showcase the positive relationships between staff, students and organisations.

University of East London Students’ Union, a registered charity run by elected student officers, offers a range of services including representation, societies, advice, leadership development and institutional direction.  As of 2014 UELSU has been awarded the Green impact silver award for green initiatives, as well as achieving a record breaking election for student participation.
