January 2025 update:

1. Postgraduate researcher representation

I've been planning my postgraduate researcher (PGR) representation project since I started the role, including meeting with the PGR director about student representation. They're on board with the idea and I'm working on the job description now - hopefully there will be PGR reps very soon!

2. Formalise student representation with public bodies

I am currently working on two campaigns, one of them is Amendments of the Renters' Rights Bill where we are asking the government to amend the bill so that landlords can't insist on guarantors when students are looking for accommodation. I met the MP for West Ham and Beckton and discussed the accommodation issues students are facing in relation to guarantors and asked him to support the amendments we are proposing.

The other campaign I am working on is students discounts on Transport for London's (TfL) pay as you go travel. Students get thirty percent discount on the student Oyster travel cards, but not pay as you go. Student officers from various universities in London formed a London Student Partnership to lobby the government for a discount on the pay as you go option

We spoke to Sampath Ganesh Sangu, Activities Officer for 2024/5, about his background, plans for the role, and top tips for students. Visit the news page to learn about this year's full officer team!

Hi, I'm Sampath. I’m currently taking a break from completing my MBA. I previously completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Visakhapatnam, India.  I am a fun-loving and positive person; I love playing sports, and I am a movie buff as well.

I decided to run for student officer because I am passionate about making a positive impact on the student community.

What are your main plans and objectives this year?

As Communities Officer my main priorities for the year include focusing on the students at the University’s partner institutions and engaging them with the Students' Union’s activities. I also plan to work for the postgraduate research (PGR) community by introducing a PGR student representative.

By the end of the academic year I hope to have achieved a more engaged PGR community and effective PGR representatives, as well as better engagement with students of partner institutions.

What is your favourite thing about being a student at UEL?

The University brings together students from all over the world, creating a truly global environment where different cultures, perspectives, and ideas are constantly exchanged. The Green at the Docklands Campus is my most favourite place on the campus. It is beautiful during the summer.

How can new students ensure they have the best start to their time here?

By going to orientation and engaging in the activities during Welcome Week to meet new people.Put lots of effort into your studies and make sure to have fun too!

Students can establish relationships with other students and foster a feeling of community by joining the Students' Union. You’ll feel more involved and supported in campus life as a result.
