Student leadership training day
We will be hosting training sessions for our new student group committees and school representatives on Thursday 5 June 2025. The sessions will take place in the Arthur Edwards building at our Stratford campus.
Attendance at some of the sessions is compulsory; this will vary for each role. Other sessions are optional, but recommended. Session 3 is a repeat of session 2, meaning you can choose different things for sessions 2 and 3. Session 5 is a repeat of session 4.
All sessions will take place between 09:00 and 17:00, and you should plan to be in attendance for the whole day. You can find the full timetable below. This includes details of who is required to attend each session

Why should you attend?
This is a great opportunity for you to learn and improve your skills, better understand your role and the Students’ Union, improve your employability, and guarantee success in your role. It’s also the perfect chance to meet other student group committees, Students’ Union staff and school representatives.
Session outlines
Leadership and teamwork: Learn how to lead as a team. We will guide you through the best way to run your group, support your committee, and how to share responsibility within a team. This is a great session for student group presidents, event officers, finance officers, school reps, and student officers.
Communication: We will focus on building up your confidence when communicating with students, staff, and peers. Learn how to make your messages clear, concise, and impactful. This is a great session for student group presidents, event officers, finance officers, school reps, and student officers.
Event and activity planning: We will teach you the process for proposing and planning events at the Students' Union. We will help you to plan fun and engaging events that meet the needs of your group. This is a great session for student group presidents, event officers, finance officers.
Inclusivity and accessibility: Find out how to make your group and its activities inclusive and accessible for everyone and create a space where all students feel welcome. This is a great session for student group presidents, student officers, and school reps.
Project planning: We will teach you some practical tools to help you plan projects from start to finish, set goals, stay on track, and stick to your timeline. This is a great session for student officers and school reps.
Budgeting and financial planning: Understand how to manage your group's finances including how Students' Union funding works, what it can (and can’t) be spent on, how to budget for events, and how to raise your own funds. This is a great session for group finance officers and events officers.
Risk assessment writing: Learn how to write a good risk assessment, so that your activity and events are safe and well organised. Learn the importance of this legal process, which is a useful skill to have once you leave university. This is a great session for group presidents, event officers, finance officers.
Leading/chairing a meeting: Learn how to chair meetings with confidence. This session will improve your skills at leading effective and successful meetings both in and out of university. This is a great session for school reps, student officers, and group presidents.
